Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Services

Early childhood mental health consultation (ECMHC) is a prevention and intervention service for young children who may be at risk for or experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. ECMHC services involve a mental health professional who collaborates with parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators to promote the healthy social-emotional development of young children.

If you care for young children, we can help.

The Early Childhood Mental Health Support Line is a no-cost, confidential resource for anyone who cares for children under six. The support line can help you to better understand and support the wellbeing of the young children in your care, including children who may currently be struggling.

Reasons to Contact Your ECMHC:

  • Challenges with a specific child in a classroom
  • Overall classroom concerns- particularly those involving social-emotional skill building
  • Challenges communicating with a parent or family
  • Challenges among staff members, staff relationships
  • Seeking support with social-emotional skill building and understanding social emotional development
  • Seeking Gateways approved trainings- typically on topics of social emotional skill building

ECMHC services can include:

  • Consultation: A mental health professional can offer guidance and support to parents, caregivers, and educators about how to promote healthy social-emotional development and address concerns as they arise.
  • Assessment: A mental health professional can assess a child's social-emotional functioning and provide recommendations for interventions or services if needed.
  •  Training: A mental health professional can provide training to early childhood educators and caregivers on strategies for promoting healthy social-emotional development and addressing challenging behaviors.
  • Referral: A mental health professional can help families and caregivers connect with community resources, such as mental health services, parenting classes, or social services.

ECMHC services are typically provided in early care and education settings, such as childcare centers, preschools, or home-based care. By promoting healthy social-emotional development in young children, ECMHC services can help prevent the development of more serious mental health problems later in life.
